The Farm

2020

We are both sad and excited to see the Abundance Cooperative leaving Solomon Brook Farm to establish their own farm just across the road. After leasing an acre of land to them for more than five years, we are sad to see them go, but excited for them. Their hard work has born fruit. It was a simple but powerful way to support local food security. We made land available to people who were keen to grow food. They could invest in their dream without having the added burden of purchasing land and paying a mortgage. The price of the lease was simply that we got all our veggies for our family for free. It was a win/win. We wish them all the best!

As a result of this move, we have scaled back the gardens but continue to grow food here at the farm.

2021

This year continues to see many changes and upgrades. With the Abundance Cooperative gone, we have begun establishing our own systems in the garden. We have started a rain collection system, collecting water run off from the roof of the main house into containers, which can be fed into the gardens through a transfer pump and irrigation lines. We are very excited to take the pressure of our pristine well water for watering the gardens and collecting and using rain water to now do the majority of watering.

This year we planted a few apple trees, plum trees and a peach tree. We had an amazing harvest this year of peaches, as well as apples and so are inspired to expand this next spring. We also planted Walnut trees, Heartnut trees, Honey Locust, Elms and Oaks. They have all grown amazingly this year. It feels deeply rewarding to begin the process of planting trees here on the property. I feel that if there is only one thing we can do to help Mother Earth at the present time, it is to plant trees. They are amazing beings and do so much for us and for the planet, from regulating water, producing air and sinking carbon, providing habitat and just are so amazingly beautiful.

This year also saw improvements to the milk room accommodation space, with the installation of a small kitchen, improved lighting and a better overall organization of the space. It continues to be a wonderful, cute retreat space.
