There is no prerequisite for this workshop but if
you are just beginning to explore carpentry
you are encouraged to take the

​Lloyd has been a carpenter and fine woodworker for over 30 years.
​He wants to make his knowledge and experience available to you

Nova Scotia has so many buildings with amazing
and inspiring roofs. A well made roof is a beautiful thing!
​It can give a simple building a character all its own!

Are you wanting to build a backyard shed or small out building?
Does building the roof excite but
​slightly overwhelm you at the same time?
Are you fascinated by the geometry of a roof and want to know how it all comes together?


  • Learn the basic structure, core concepts and practical skills needed for building a shed, gable and hip style roof.
  • Learn how to calculate rise, run and pitch.
  • Learn how to use a rafter square and a framing square to mark the cuts and determine the length of rafters.
  • Learn how to achieve consistent, accurate and satisfying results in an easy and understandable way.​

hands-on practical course that will empower you

under the guidance of 
experienced carpenters.

Cancellation Policy
​
  • Cancellations made up to 14 days before the beginning of any workshop will receive a full refund minus the non-refundable deposit 
  • Cancellations made within 14 days of the start of the workshop will receive a %50 refund 
  • There are no refunds for cancellations made after the start of the workshop. (Depending on circumstances  - a credit may be offered for any other course that a person may wish to sign up for. This will be assessed on an individual basis)

This 4 day workshop will be held
over 2 weekends

Saturday June 27th   10 am - 4 pm
Sunday June 28th     11 am - 5 pm

  Saturday July 4th     10 am - 4 pm
​   Sunday July 5th      11 am - 5 pm



There will be a 1 hour lunch break every day
​

There are a number of places to get food for lunch within a
10 minute drive from the farm.
​
You can also bring your own lunch and enjoy it at the farm.

Course Outline

Day 1 - The Geometry and Structure of a Roof

  • Understanding rise, run and pitch
  • Using a rafter square (often called a speed square) to mark the plumb (or vertical) cuts and the seat cuts for a common rafter.  
  • How to use a carpenter's square to determine the length of a common rafter
  • How to cut rafters for a shed style roof

Day 2 - The Gable Roof

  • Understanding roof structure - structural vs compression Roofs
  • Ridge board vs. ridge beam 
  • Mark, cut and assemble a gable style roof
  • Outline different approaches to overhangs

Day 3 - The Hip Roof (also known as cottage style)

  • Understanding the basic elements of a hip roof: common rafter, king rafter, hip rafter and jack rafters
  • Determine the layout for a basic hip roof.
  • Use a carpenter's square to determine the length of the hip rafters
  • Mark and cut the plum and seat cuts for the hip rafters
  • Use a carpenter's square to determine the length of the jack rafters
  • ​Assemble a hip roof

Day 4 - Overhangs

  • Understanding the terminology of overhangs - eaves, soffits, (sub)facia and rake boards.
  • Basic approaches to building overhangs
  • Finish overhangs - including mounting (sub) facia boards, rake boards and soffits. 
  • Venting a roof for insulation
