you are just beginning to explore carpentry
you are encouraged to take the

Basic Carpentry workshop
before taking the Roof Framing workshop

He wants to make his knowledge and experience available to you

- Learn the basic structure, core concepts and practical skills needed for building a shed, gable and hip style roof.
- Learn how to calculate rise, run and pitch.
- Learn how to use a rafter square and a framing square to mark the cuts and determine the length of rafters.
- Learn how to achieve consistent, accurate and satisfying results in an easy and understandable way.

Cancellation Policy
- Cancellations made up to 14 days before the beginning of any workshop will receive a full refund minus the non-refundable deposit
- Cancellations made within 14 days of the start of the workshop will receive a %50 refund
- There are no refunds for cancellations made after the start of the workshop. (Depending on circumstances - a credit may be offered for any other course that a person may wish to sign up for. This will be assessed on an individual basis)

There will be a 1 hour lunch break every day
There are a number of places to get food for lunch within a
10 minute drive from the farm.
You can also bring your own lunch and enjoy it at the farm.

Course Outline
Day 1 - The Geometry and Structure of a Roof
- Understanding rise, run and pitch
- Using a rafter square (often called a speed square) to mark the plumb (or vertical) cuts and the seat cuts for a common rafter.
- How to use a carpenter's square to determine the length of a common rafter
- How to cut rafters for a shed style roof
Day 2 - The Gable Roof
- Understanding roof structure - structural vs compression Roofs
- Ridge board vs. ridge beam
- Mark, cut and assemble a gable style roof
- Outline different approaches to overhangs
Day 3 - The Hip Roof (also known as cottage style)
- Understanding the basic elements of a hip roof: common rafter, king rafter, hip rafter and jack rafters
- Determine the layout for a basic hip roof.
- Use a carpenter's square to determine the length of the hip rafters
- Mark and cut the plum and seat cuts for the hip rafters
- Use a carpenter's square to determine the length of the jack rafters
- Assemble a hip roof
Day 4 - Overhangs
- Understanding the terminology of overhangs - eaves, soffits, (sub)facia and rake boards.
- Basic approaches to building overhangs
- Finish overhangs - including mounting (sub) facia boards, rake boards and soffits.
- Venting a roof for insulation
