- Batter Boards: making and using Batter Boards to ensure that your project is layed out square. Using 3/4/5 to find square.
Application
Students will:
- Make and install batter boards and string lines to align and square the layout for the footings of a small shed
- Lay out footings for shed structure.
By using this approach, students will also gain an understanding of deck building.

Testimonials from Previous Workshop Participants
Well worth the time and the trip from Halifax. (Also, my first time in the beautiful countryside around Barrs Corner!)
I learned a great deal from you during the 6 day framing workshop. I really enjoyed the combination of theory (e.g. why nails are better than screws for framing, or how to calculate the pitch of a roof) with practice (e.g. how to use nails to move as well as fasten a joist or a stud).
Being part of the building process from start to finish also taught me a valuable lesson – one always had to consider possible future consequences when trying to come up with a solution to a problem.
I also enjoyed working with the ‘crew’—three other ‘students’ each with different backgrounds and experiences, each contributing to the overall learning experience.
All of it gave me the confidence to know that I could now plan and build not just a shed, but a good, solid and square shed! A.R.

Thank you for teaching your courses. You made it simple to understand. I had not even picked up a power tool until I took your first course last fall. Because of your teaching me 'how to' I was able to build most of this by myself! (see photo on the right)
