Day 1

Foundations

Topics covered will include

  • Clarifying what is meant by a Foundation and what is meant by a Footing - how they are similar and how they are different. In simple terms every footing is a foundation but not every foundation is a footing. (Footings are often used on their own to support smaller structures like decks, sheds, pergolas, arbors and fence posts).
  • The use of simple footings such as skids, pier or deck blocks, as well as concrete and wood piers for small structures.
  • Batter Boards: making and using Batter Boards to ensure that your project is layed out square. Using 3/4/5 to find square.

Application

Students will:
  • Make and install batter boards and string lines to align and square the layout for the footings of a small shed
  • Lay out footings for shed structure.

By using this approach, students will also gain an understanding of deck building.

Day 2
Morning - Anatomy of a Building
Afternoon - Floor Structures

Topics covered will include:

  • Designing a small shed and putting together a materials list. Costing out your project.(For the purpose of this course we will go over the predetermined design and materials list for the shed that students will be building - materials will have already been bought)
  • Using span tables to determine size and spacing of material to achieve best building practices, both for economy and for structural integrity.
  • Basics of floor structures including joists and joist spans, blocking and subfloor
  • Laying out floor joists and perimeter joists.

Application

Students will:
  • Install posts and beams to the footings
  • Begin building the floor structure.

Day 3

Floor Structures continued

Topics covered will include:
  • Subfloor - materials.
  • How to lay out and install subfloor
  • Vapour barriers and insulation for winterized buildings

Application:
  • Students will continue with floor installation including installation of subfloor
Please note: each day's topics will also include discussion of the use of appropriate fasteners for the different areas, including the many different choices, what is allowed and not allowed by code, as well as best practices and personal preferences.

Day 4

Walls

Topics covered will include:

  • Load bearing and non-load bearing walls, exterior and interior walls, studs, plates, backing, and rough openings.
  • How to mark and lay out the plates and studs for building a wall
  • Outline standard spacing of material, and standard measurements for rough opening of doors and windows.
  • Anatomy of a rough opening for windows and doors including headers, king and jack studs and cripples
  • Exterior sheathing for walls.

Application

Students will:
  • Lay out and build both load bearing and non-load bearing walls for shed, including walls with a rough opening for a window and a door.
  • Install exterior sheathing on walls

Day 5

Gable Roof

Topics covered will include:

  • Geometry of a gable roof. Understand rise, run and pitch
  • A comparison of compression style vs structural style roof
  • Ridge board vs ridge beam, rafter ties and collar ties, load bearing and non-load bearing walls in the different systems.
  • Lay out and measuring a common rafter, taking into account overhangs and ridge board
  • Lay out of ridge board to account for overhangs
  • Placement of collar ties and rafter ties

Application

Students will:

  • Mark, measure and cut a template of the common rafter for the compression style gable roof of shed.
  • Cut all the common rafters for the shed using template
  • Cut and install ridge board with temporary supports, ready for installing rafters        on Day 6

Day 6

  • Overhangs
  • Sheathing a gable roof

Testimonials from Previous Workshop Participants
Well worth the time and the trip from Halifax. (Also, my first time in the beautiful countryside around Barrs Corner!)
I learned a great deal from you during the 6 day framing workshop. I really enjoyed the combination of theory (e.g. why nails are better than screws for framing, or how to calculate the pitch of a roof) with practice (e.g. how to use nails to move as well as fasten a joist or a stud).
Being part of the building process from start to finish also taught me a valuable lesson – one always had to consider possible future consequences when trying to come up with a solution to a problem.
I also enjoyed working with the ‘crew’—three other ‘students’ each with different backgrounds and experiences, each contributing to the overall learning experience.
All of it gave me the confidence to know that I could now plan and build not just a shed, but a good, solid and square shed!  A.R.

Thank you for teaching your courses. You made it simple to understand. I had not even picked up a power tool until I took your first course last fall. Because of your teaching me 'how to' I was able to build most of this by myself!   (see photo on the right)

Thanks for the great hands-on course Lloyd. I really got a lot out of it. The class size was ideal! E. L.
