Pearl of Africa Vision Mission
Our goal - raise money to support children in Uganda to have enough food, receive a quality education and to help vulnerable youth, young mothers, men and women gain skills for the future. |
"Where there is despair, let me bring hope"
St Francis of Assisi Early in 2022, Lloyd spent a month volunteering on a project in Gulu Uganda. Gulu is a city in the region of Uganda known as Acoliland. (Acholiland) He was there to provide woodworking and carpentry training to local youth. His time there was an amazing gift for him. He fell in love with these beautiful and inspiring young people. The beauty of their culture, their love and generosity, and the power and resilience of their spirit have had a profound effect on him and his heart is forever changed. It is an extremely impoverished area, and the challenges are great, but he saw how empowering it was for these youth to acquire knowledge and skills and because of this, see hope for themselves, their loved ones, their community and their future. Lloyd is now working together with a group of local people in the Kampala region of Uganda to operate a primary school in the Luwero District. He is working directly with Namarome Manjeri, a woman from the area and a person with great vision. Lloyd is truly inspired by her! Together with her team in Kampala, they are creating a non-profit called Pearl of Africa Vision Mission. |
Update: 2024
Pearl of Africa Vision Mission has been offered a small school building and has decided to take over this facility.
The school is called East Bank International School.
The school is registering students for Nursery/Kindergarten (age 3 - 5) and Primary 1 - 3.
At present there are 35 students registered for the new year. We have hired 2 teachers who will begin teaching at the start of the first term in February.
Pearl of Africa Vision Mission is a registered non profit community based organization that is operating the school by accepting students who can pay tuition so that it is not dependent on fundraising to meet basic costs.
Our fundraising efforts are focused on specific projects and infrastructure that are very needed at the school.
Our long term goal is to be able to grow the school to have more students and educational levels, and to be able to reach out into the community. We continue to hold our vision to expand into other community programs such as skills training. It will be a steady and long term process.
This is very encouraging and exciting.

Everyone is busy getting the school ready for the opening of the new term.
Pearl of Africa Vision Mission is very excited! We now have 40 students registered for the start of this term.
Tuition covers teacher's salaries, a daily food program, uniforms and basic school supplies, but there is no money for extras. A friend is lending the school chairs and tables for all the students to help get us started!
Help support the future of these beautiful young people by donating to these much needed and urgent projects
Complete Kitchen Building: Help us finish the roof, install doors and windows
$1500 Canadian needed to finish ($3,800,000 Ugandan Shilling)

Uganda is one of the poorest countries in the world. Food programs are an essential element in children's education. Children are provided food everyday. This helps maintain their health and also ensures that the time spent in school is worthwhile. It enables them to be present and focus as many children come to school hungry.

Install Fencing: $5,500 Canadian (15,000,000 Ugandan Shilling)
Ugandan regulations require that the school be fenced all the way around the property.

Children's Playground: $1348 of $2000 has been raised. Help us get to our goal!
East Bank International School has six classrooms, but no play area for the children.
Studies have shown that having a well constructed playground helps promote students' learning.
A playground gives them something exciting and constructive to do where they can learn to engage with each other while developing their social skills. Absenteeism is reduced because children are excited to come to school so they can use the playground

Pearl of Africa Vision Mission:
"to see community youth, women, men and children who are socially, economically and politically empowered and with a voice to control their own future and destiny"
Mission:
"to support community youth, women, men and children to be empowered and reach their full potential."
The cycle of poverty is extreme. For the many poor families in the region, who often earn less than $2 per day, the cost of school uniforms, books, and stationery becomes too much to bear, pushing children out of school or leading families into debt. Illness and the pressure of domestic work keep many children from attending school regularly.
Because of lack of funding, the quality of education in public schools is very poor. According to UNICEF, while the introduction of universal primary education in Uganda in 1997 "...greatly improved access it did not improve quality." Teacher absenteeism is rampant. Many are underpaid and are forced to find supplemental work elsewhere. According to UNICEF, more than %60 of teachers are not in the classroom teaching in over half of all of Uganda's public schools. Private schools have tried to fill the void, but to keep these schools operating, the tuition costs are very high. This makes it impossible for most families to keep their children in school.
Less than half of children are literate at the end of primary school.
Only 1 in 4 children who start primary school make it to secondary school.
As a non-profit our mission is to provide a quality education and to provide an opportunity for adults and parents to come to the school and learn skills such as sewing, cooking, baking, soap making, craft and trade skills, providing them with an opportunity to gain an income for their families.
Please support these beautiful young children to become empowered and reach their full potential!
